French and Francophone Studies

The French and Francophone major focuses on becoming fluent in the language, both spoken and written, and knowledgeable about the culture and literature of the French-speaking world. Our department also sponsors an optional Summer Study Abroad Program in France to enhance exposure to the language. French majors are fully prepared to enter graduate programs in French Literature and Linguistics, as well as teach at the high school level. The mastery of French can also lead to many opportunities in government, commerce or hospitality, either abroad or within Florida which is home to over 200 French companies. One of the official languages of Canada, US's largest trading partner, French is an ideal second major or minor for students in Business or International Relations.

Geography

The BA in Geography educates students in the study of the spatial patterns of human interactions with natural and built environments. Geography includes regional studies, and many students become experts in Latin America, Asia, Africa, or other world regions. Geographers confront real world problems including the causes and consequences of climate change, racial and ethnic segregation in cities, conflicts over boundaries and territories, industrial location, and agriculture production and food distribution, to name only a few. Graduates will find employment opportunities in a wide variety of careers in the public, private, and non-profit sectors. Students acquire a global perspective and valuable skills including social survey techniques, ethnography, social statistical sampling methods, computerized social data analysis, and computer-based mapping of social phenomena.

Relying on a variety of documents, historians develop interpretations of a wide range of the human experience, including scientific and technological breakthroughs, famines, the formation, evolution and conflicts of family groups, mass migrations, wars, cultural encounters, and revolutions. History students are trained to be critical readers, good writers, and astute analysts. These qualities and skills are fundamental for success in business activities, public and professional careers, teaching, and advanced studies.
